Shift towards futures inevitable, says Greenwich

To address the cost pressures associated with regulation, both buy- and sell-side participants have started analysing the impact of adopting futures in their trading habits

In the model developed by Greenwich Associates, FX futures appear to be a cheaper alternative than executing in the OTC markets – with savings upward of 75% in some cases

The economic benefits of trading futures as an alternative to over-the-counter instruments will continue to drive growth in the foreign exchange futures markets, according to a quantitative research from financial consultancy firm Greenwich Associates.

Many of the most actively traded FX instruments – swaps and forwards – are exempt from recent regulatory requirements placed on other types of derivatives, such as mandatory clearing and exchange of initial margin.
